On August 15th, 2026, a one-of-one Macklin Celebrini rookie card sold for $1.28 million — the most ever paid for a hockey card that doesn't have Wayne Gretzky on it. It more than doubled the modern record set by a Connor McDavid rookie patch auto eight months earlier.
So the market has made its call. This video asks whether the evidence supports it.
We go through Celebrini's 115-point age-19 season — 4th in NHL scoring, 3rd in even-strength goals, and 56 points clear of San Jose's next-highest scorer, the widest gap between a team's top two scorers since 1990-91. We look at the tracking data that had him leading every forward in the league in puck battles won. We put him against the only five teenagers in NHL history to score 100 points.
And then we look at Connor McDavid — six Art Ross Trophies, three Harts, a Conn Smythe won in a Game 7 loss, and no Stanley Cup — to explain why none of the production above decides where a player finishes all-time.
