In 1933, at the very bottom of the Great Depression, a single brand-new steam locomotive rolled out of a shop in upstate New York. As far as records show, it was the only steam locomotive built in the entire United States that year. It was also the most advanced steam locomotive in America, and quite possibly the world: it ran a boiler pressure more than double a normal engine's, and it expanded its steam three separate times, like the engine of an ocean liner. It was named after the president of the railroad himself. And the crews who ran her came to dread her, because, as one of them famously put it, every time we sent her out, a machine shop had to go with her.
This is the story of the Delaware & Hudson's four high-pressure experimental locomotives, the Horatio Allen, John B. Jervis, James Archbald, and L.F. Loree, built between 1924 and 1933 under Leonor F. Loree, one of the most brilliant and efficiency-obsessed railroad presidents who ever lived. This video explains what boiler pressure and compounding actually do, why Loree's instinct to chase the efficiency of marine and power-plant engines was completely correct on paper, and why it still failed catastrophically in practice. The answer comes down to one brutal truth his beautiful theory ignored: a locomotive is not a ship or a power plant. It gets pounded over rough track and maintained by ordinary roundhouse crews, and that environment is poison for delicate high-pressure machinery. The water-tube boilers leaked, the complex machinery broke, and the real fuel savings drowned in repair bills. We contrast it with the Big Boy, the brute-simple giant that ran lower pressure and single-expansion steam and became an immortal legend precisely because it refused to be clever.
Corrections built into this video: these were not stupid engines. The physics was sound, high-pressure compound steam genuinely is more efficient, and these engines really did burn less coal. Loree was no crank. The tragedy is that a correct idea, well executed, was killed by the realities of where it had to live. A handful of other roads on both sides of the Atlantic tried the same thing in these years and hit the same wall.
