Why Isn’t Your Waterproof Jacket Waterproof?
You bought a waterproof jacket. You step into the rain. A few minutes later, the fabric feels cold, heavy, and wet — and somehow your shirt is damp too.
So what happened?
This video follows the hidden chemistry behind modern rain gear: waterproof membranes, DWR coatings, C8 and C6 fluorochemistry, PFAS “forever chemicals,” and the environmental trade-off that quietly changed how jackets, boots, tents, backpacks, and other products repel water.
The strange part is that your jacket may not actually be leaking. The waterproof membrane can still be working while the outer fabric becomes saturated, breathability collapses, and your own sweat leaves you soaked from the inside.
All research and sources are listed below.
📚 RESEARCH & SOURCES:
▸ U.S. EPA — PFOA Stewardship Program — In 2006, eight major chemical manufacturers joined a program to reduce PFOA emissions and product content by 95% by 2010 and work toward eliminating them by 2015.
▸ U.S. EPA — PFOA & PFAS — EPA documents the environmental persistence of PFOA and its historical use in chemistry associated with water-, stain-, and grease-resistant products.
▸ Greenpeace Detox Outdoor / Leaving Traces — Testing of outdoor clothing and equipment found PFCs across much of the gear tested and helped increase pressure on outdoor brands to move away from long-chain fluorinated chemistry.
▸ GORE-TEX Product Care — Gore recommends regularly washing and drying waterproof garments and reapplying DWR when necessary to maintain water-repellent performance.
▸ Durable Water Repellent (DWR) — The microscopic surface treatment responsible for making rain bead and roll off the outer fabric. When DWR performance declines, the face fabric can saturate even while the waterproof membrane underneath remains intact.
▸ C8 → C6 → fluorine-free DWR — The outdoor industry progressively moved away from long-chain fluorinated repellents toward shorter-chain and non-fluorinated alternatives. The environmental problem and the exceptional water repellency of the older chemistry were closely connected.

PEOPLE, ORGANIZATIONS & TECHNOLOGIES MENTIONED:
▸ Bob Gore — Developed expanded PTFE in 1969, the material that became the basis of GORE-TEX waterproof-breathable membranes.
▸ GORE-TEX — Waterproof-breathable technology built around a microporous membrane designed to block liquid water while allowing water vapor to escape.
▸ 3M — One of the major manufacturers involved in the historical transition away from long-chain perfluorinated chemistry discussed in the video.
▸ U.S. Environmental Protection Agency — Launched the 2010/2015 PFOA Stewardship Program with eight major manufacturers.
▸ Greenpeace Detox — Campaign that pressured outdoor brands to eliminate hazardous PFCs from waterproofing technologies.
▸ DWR — Durable Water Repellent, the nearly invisible surface treatment that makes water bead instead of soaking into a jacket’s face fabric.
▸ PFAS / “Forever Chemicals” — A large family of highly persistent fluorinated compounds whose environmental persistence drove major regulatory and industry changes.
