This is a single credit clear (1CC) of Steel Empire for the Sega Genesis, played on the SuperStation 1 MiSTer FPGA hooked up via component to the Philips 27PS55. I’ll be completely honest: Steel Empire didn’t click with me the first few times I played it. The steampunk aesthetic was striking, the soundtrack was excellent, but the gameplay initially felt a bit underwhelming. I wasn’t convinced the Zeppelin had much practical value outside of a few niche situations (its massive hitbox certainly didn’t help) and several boss fights felt overly long to the point of being tedious. Even the sound effects rubbed me the wrong way. But the more time I spent with the game, the more I began to understand why so many players consider it a hidden gem on the Genesis. The controls are tight, the leveling system works surprisingly well, and the overall presentation is top‑tier. There are still a few rough edges, like the very short i‑frame window after taking damage and some stage hazards that lean heavily on memorization, but taken as a whole, Steel Empire is absolutely worth your time. It’s a shooter that rewards familiarity, and once it opens up, it becomes far more enjoyable than it first appears.
