WaterMarks: An Atlas of Water for the City of Milwaukee is a groundbreaking initiative, an intricate network of participatory engagement designed to deepen our understanding of water's profound significance in our daily lives. This multi-layered framework features a series of illuminated WaterMarkers dispersed throughout the city, forming a conceptual Atlas of Water, with the goal of engaging residents from all corners of Milwaukee. Each WaterMarker represents a single character, influenced by local input and tied to its unique location. Adorned in blue to symbolize our connection to water, these markers are programmed to pulse red when heavy rain is expected, serving as a visual signal about the importance of individual actions in reducing flooding and sewer overflows. Milwaukee, known as the freshwater capital of the world, is situated on the western shore of the world's fifth-largest freshwater lake and the confluence of three rivers—the Milwaukee, Kinnickinnic, and Menomonee. WaterMarks, a city-wide initiative, aims to bring attention to often unseen or overlooked water systems within the city, prompting viewers to consider their role in preserving these resources for future generations.
