“Droppin’ Shucks” is a lively traditional jazz instrumental composed by Lil Hardin Armstrong. The All Star Trio—Art Hodes on piano, Pops Foster on bass, and Baby Dodds on drums—gives the tune an energetic old-time jazz treatment. Hodes’ ragtime- and blues-influenced piano is propelled by Foster’s strong bass and Dodds’ New Orleans drumming. A contemporary Billboard review noted the authentic New Orleans character and brisk tempo of the performance.
The Smithsonian identifies the original 78 as Jazz Record 1011, with “Droppin’ Shucks” backed by “Swanee,” and dates it to 1947. Since Billboard reviewed Jazz Records 1010 and 1011 in its June 7, 1947 issue, the disc was commercially available by that date.
