April 18, 1942. The sea was heavy, and the deck of the carrier Hornet rose and fell through dozens of feet with every swell. Parked on it were sixteen Army B-25 bombers — land planes, too big to fit in the hangar and too big to land back on the ship. A Japanese picket boat had just spotted the task force. The bombers were about 650 miles from Japan, ten hours early, and many might not have enough fuel to reach China. The order came anyway: Launch planes. Four months after Pearl Harbor, eighty volunteers flew a mission whose target they learned only at sea. This is the story of Jimmy Doolittle and his raiders — the painted carrier deck that inspired the idea, the short-takeoff training in Florida, the twenty-cent bombsight and broomstick tail guns, the bombing of Tokyo at noon, and a night over China with no beacons and empty fuel tanks. It is also the story of the men who were captured and executed, of the Chinese villagers who hid the Americans and paid for it in a brutal reprisal campaign, and of how sixteen bombers pushed Japan toward the Battle of Midway.
