I have to say, when I first saw these strings, I was pretty convinced the whole silk thing was just a gimmick. But no. They really use silk. Here’s a quote from the Ernie Ball website:
Ernie Ball Earthwood Silk & Steel Extra Soft 80/20 Bronze acoustic guitar strings are made with an 80/20 bronze alloy wrap, along with a layer of silk between the wrap and steel core.
The silk produces a more mellow sound and makes the string feel more comfortable while reducing finger noise.
Real Silk
So there you have it. So far I haven’t been able to find any cool videos or even an explanation as to how they make these cool strings, but I’d be interested to find out!
If you find anything, share it on my FB page. I thank you in advance!
On to the review:
Sound
Because, if they don’t sound great, then who cares if your fingers squeak when you change a chord.
These strings sound fantastic. It’s interesting because there’s actually a mellow quality. In my video How To Change Strings, I replaced my old and worn out DR strings with these Ernie Ball Silk&Steel Extra Soft.
During the video I did a before and after. I was expecting the almost harsh, bright sound new strings usually provide. I was surprised at how mellow the new strings sounded.
Comparing the before and after clips, the sound is obviously better, crisper, and overall much nicer than the old strings, but…mellow.
I really like the sound.
Staying In Tune
Once again, I’m going to refer to the changing strings video. Towards the end of the video, I demonstrate how to stretch the new strings so they stay in tune faster.
I talked about how when you put new strings on, they tend to go out of tune quickly. So I demonstrated, bent the string, and to my surprise the darned thing stayed in tune.
The strings hadn’t been on the guitar for five minutes yet.
So much for my demonstration.
Yes. These things stay in tune. No wonder Jimmy Page uses Ernie Ball strings!
Long Lasting
I don’t see anywhere that Ernie Ball claims the silk winding in these strings makes them last any longer, but I’ve had these on for almost a month now and they still sound great.
I should mention that I’m not the only one playing my guitar also. Two of my boys also play the thing daily. So I would say YES. They are long lasting!
One Other Thing
My boys are just really starting to get into the whole bar chord thing. These strings seem to actually make bar chords a little easier for the beginner. I don’t know why. But they do.
In Great Company
Here is a short list of some fine folks who use these strings:
Jimmy Page
Steve Vai
Brad Paisley
Joe Walsh
Kirk Hammett
…never mind. Because the list just goes on and on. But I think you get the idea.
