When one attack fails, the enemy may change his tactics, using praise instead of humiliation, comfort instead of hardship, despair instead of pleasure, or thoughts arising within the heart itself. Her teachings call us to vigilance over our thoughts and senses, discernment in ascetic struggle, humility, repentance, prayer, freedom from resentment, and perseverance when the spiritual life becomes difficult. She warns against destructive sorrow and despair, reminds us never to judge those who fall, and teaches that genuine virtue should be lived quietly before God rather than displayed before others. Like sailors enduring a storm, Christians must not abandon the spiritual journey when circumstances change. Saint Syncletica reminds us that struggle comes before spiritual joy, just as smoke comes before the flame. Through patience, repentance, prayer, humility, and love, the soul continues its journey toward Christ.
