I typically only use a 6wt when it comes to fresh water because it makes everything way more fun. You don't want a heavy rod because its just a little too much for these fish. Although I've been targeting large snakehead with a 10wt, but that's due to the nature of where I'm fishing and the super heavy cover they live in. I'm not chancing loosing a trophy fish on fly if it decides to bury itself in some thick grass.
