Fischertechnik 2-speed transmission with reversing mechanism. This little demonstration model built from the Fischertechnik Retro Mechanics construction set illustrates a simple way to build a 2-speed transmission with reverse drive. Although this model is not nearly as sophisticated and compact as the advanced transmissions in some of the advanced LEGO Technic sets I find that it illustrates the concepts of a multi-speed transmission quite well. It also illustrates the challenge of meshing the gears' teeth when changing gear. The clip also illustrates the difficulty in filming rotating gears, since the interaction between the gears' rotational speed and the camera's frame rate sometimes produces some unexpected visual effects, like a gear being stationary or even running backwards.
