Autumn has arrived, and the garden is slowly growing quiet.
The flowers that bloomed through spring and summer are fading one by one. When I think of autumn flowers, chrysanthemums are my favourite — unafraid of the cooling weather, they continue to bloom brightly in the autumn breeze.
But in the September garden, there is another flower to be found.
With no lush green leaves and no tall stems, a few delicate lilac flowers quietly emerge straight from the earth. They look very much like the crocuses that bloom in spring, yet they choose to flower when summer is over and the other flowers are beginning to fade.
It is called the Autumn Crocus.
Looking at these small, quiet flowers, I suddenly thought that perhaps life is much the same.
We often think that spring belongs to flowers and youth belongs to dreams, that certain things in life are supposed to happen at a certain time. But nature reminds us that not every flower needs to bloom in spring.
Some flowers pass through spring, remain silent all summer, and only when the autumn breeze arrives do they rise quietly from beneath the earth and open in their own colours.
Every life has its own season to bloom.
It doesn't matter if spring has already passed.
Perhaps your season is only just beginning.
