Experience hiking, scrambling, off-road driving, and exploring the wild landscapes of Iceland’s Snæfellsnes Peninsula, often called “Iceland in Miniature.” This Icelandic adventure features dramatic coastal cliffs, hidden waterfalls, glacier-covered mountains, scenic four-wheel drive roads, volcanic caves, remote mountain passes, picturesque fishing villages, and white sand beaches as Morgan, Josh, my parents, and I explore some of the peninsula’s most popular destinations and incredible hidden gems.
To be honest, I was skeptical of the Peninsula going into the trip. Coming off of the incredible sites on Iceland’s south coast and Golden Circle, Snæfellsnes seemed like a downgrade in terms of hikes and scenery. I couldn’t have been more wrong!
During our adventure on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, we hiked the spectacular coastal trail from Hellnar to Arnarstapi, including seeing Hellnar’s incredible sea-arch and relaxing at Fjöruhúsið Café, a must go cafe with tasty drinks and delicious desserts, before scrambling deep inside Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge to discover the hidden waterfalls within. Such a treat of a day that had it all.
The next day, we tackled the remote mountain roads of F-570 (Jökulháls) and F-575 (Eysteinsdalsleið), driving through breathtaking highland scenery beneath the glacier and exploring the hidden caves of Sönghellir. Along the way, we discovered a secluded waterfall where Josh and I took an insanely cold dip in a glacial stream underneath a hidden waterfall before continuing to Klukkufoss, a stunning double waterfall with sweet geology including blocky basaltic columns. The adventure continued in Stykkishólmur, where we grabbed fish and chips from the famous Hafnarvagninn food truck, Morgan’s first time eating fish in over a decade, explored the harbor, and spotted tons of moon jellyfish and lion’s mane jellyfish in the water. We then hiked to Grundarfoss, our favorite waterfall of the day, before visiting the iconic Kirkjufellsfoss beneath Kirkjufell, one of Iceland’s most photographed mountains. We wrapped up the day at the beautiful white sand beach of Skarðsvík, then returned to our Airbnb in Hellnar to see an incredible double rainbow stretching over the Atlantic Ocean.
In this video, you’ll experience what it’s like to explore Iceland beyond the typical tourist stops, including rugged coastal hikes, narrow gorge scrambles, hidden caves, remote F-road driving, glacial landscapes, waterfalls, and unforgettable encounters with Iceland’s wild beauty. Whether you’re planning a trip to Iceland, looking for hiking inspiration, or simply love scenic road trips and outdoor adventures, this journey showcases the incredible variety, adventure, and hidden wonders of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.
