Walk through Kapani Market and Athonos Square in Thessaloniki, exploring two of the city centre’s most characteristic pedestrian market districts in daylight. This 4K HDR Thessaloniki walking tour with natural city sounds also takes you inside Venizelou Metro Station to the beginning of its remarkable archaeological remains. We start with Kapani Market, officially known as Vlali Market, one of Thessaloniki’s oldest traditional markets. Much of the area is pedestrianised, with covered passages and narrow market streets lined with butchers, fishmongers, fruit and vegetable stalls, spices, olives, local food products, clothing, household goods and souvenir shops. Kapani remains a genuine working market used by locals as well as visitors. Parts of Kapani have now been noticeably renovated, with upgraded pedestrian streets, lighting and public spaces giving sections of the historic market a fresher appearance while the traditional stalls continue operating around them. Further improvements are continuing under the Kapani Open Mall programme. The walk approaches Kapani from several sides, showing how the market connects with the surrounding commercial streets of central Thessaloniki. Its distinctive covered entrances now make the transition into the market particularly noticeable. From Kapani we continue to Venizelou Metro Station. Rather than taking a train, we descend through the station as far as the publicly accessible area before the ticket gates, where the first archaeological displays and remains begin. Athonos mixes traditional shops selling spices, nuts, food products, handmade items and clothing with pedestrian streets full of tavernas and restaurants. This is a daytime Thessaloniki walk, when Kapani is still very much a working market and Athonos combines shopping, food and relaxed outdoor dining.
