Are Modern Relationships Too Selfish to Last? | Safe Space by Divya Jain
Is love still enough to make a relationship last?
Dating apps have given us more choices than ever. Self-love has taught us to prioritise ourselves. Financial independence has changed what we expect from marriage. And terms like situationships, breadcrumbing, open relationships and “living apart together” are changing what commitment itself can look like.
But have these changes made relationships healthier, or simply harder to sustain?
In this episode of Safe Space, Divya sits down with Priya Malik, Sejal, Hardik and Vikas for an open conversation about modern love, commitment, marriage, money, cheating, compatibility and compromise.

In This Conversation
Priya Malik explores some of the emotional contradictions of modern relationships: where self-respect ends and ego begins, how social media shapes our idea of the “perfect relationship”, why people cheat, whether a relationship deserves a second chance after infidelity, and whether relationships themselves have become emotionally exhausting.
Sejal brings the conversation to adjustment, expectations and independence. When did adjustment start feeling like sacrifice? Do people want a perfect partner instead of someone they can grow with? Has women’s increasing financial independence changed the way marriage is viewed? And when choosing a life partner, how much should love matter compared with financial security?
Hardik questions whether the rise of self-love has also lowered our tolerance for difficult phases in relationships. He discusses why people may hesitate to commit when they believe someone “better” could always be available, how arranged and love marriages differ today, whether money really stops mattering when real financial responsibilities arrive, and whether one person inevitably loves more in a relationship.
Vikas examines compatibility and what commitment actually means today. From different love languages and expectations around husbands and wives to financial stability, marriage and the need for personal space, he asks whether we have become better at setting boundaries or simply less willing to work through differences. He also explores whether love can ever be “calculated” without becoming transactional.
We Also Talk About
Dating apps and the paradox of choice, situationships and modern dating labels, marriage versus committed relationships, traditional expectations versus modern independence, money and financial stress, personal space and Living Apart Together (LAT), emotional versus physical compatibility, cheating and second chances, sexual history, open relationships and partner swapping, and ultimately the question at the heart of the episode:
What actually makes a relationship last: love, compatibility, loyalty, commitment or compromise?
There may not be one universal answer. But this conversation brings together very different perspectives on what we expect from love today and what we are still willing to give in return.
