How does a battery energy storage system keep the grid current perfectly flat when a load suddenly jumps from 1 kW to 10 kW? In this video, we walk through a complete, working Simulink model of a grid-tied EV charging station with a Battery Energy Storage System (BES) — line by line, block by block.
We start with the power circuit: a three-phase diode rectifier, the DC link capacitor, two half-bridge DC-DC converters, and the battery module. Then we open the controller and trace both control loops in detail: the grid-side current-mode controller that holds the DC link at 400 V, and the battery-side cascaded PI controller with its clever enabling switch that flips the battery from charging at −30 A to discharging at +23 A in microseconds. You'll see exactly how the modulating signals are compared against 12 kHz triangular carriers to generate complementary PWM pulses — and why those integrator saturation limits (±50, ±0.95, and [0, 0.95]) are anti-windup protection, not decoration.
Finally, we analyze the simulation results: the DC link voltage barely flinches during a tenfold load step, the grid current stays constant, and the battery absorbs the entire disturbance. That's load leveling.
