“Kaiserhymne” (“Emperor’s Hymn”) was the imperial anthem of the Austrian Empire and one of the most important musical symbols of the Habsburg monarchy. The melody was composed by Joseph Haydn in 1797, during the reign of Emperor Francis II/I, with lyrics by Lorenz Leopold Haschka. The hymn was created in honor of the emperor and the Austrian monarchy and was first performed on February 12, 1797, Francis II/I’s birthday. The melody later became associated with the German national anthem through the use of the same tune for Das Deutschlandlied, although the two works have distinct historical contexts.
