//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
In the ancient land of Harput in Elazığ, there is a cave that freezes in the middle of summer…
Its name is Buzluk Cave.
This is no ordinary cave. Thanks to its unique geological structure and natural air circulation system, thick layers of ice form inside—even during the hottest months of the year. While the temperature outside reaches 35–40°C (95–104°F), the cave creates the opposite effect. Warm air is drawn inward, moisture condenses, cold air becomes trapped, and ice begins to form naturally.
It is as if an invisible, underground natural refrigerator has been operating here for centuries.
But the story goes beyond geology.
For generations, the people of Harput would cut blocks of ice from this cave during the summer months and transport them into the city on the backs of animals. Known locally as the “ice of blessing,” this natural ice was used to preserve food, cool drinks, and even as a source of trade.
Long before electricity and modern refrigeration, this cave functioned as the region’s natural cold storage system—an essential ally against the burning Anatolian heat.
Just imagine…
In an era without technology, people discovered a hidden gift beneath the earth and turned it into survival, commerce, and ingenuity.
Today, Buzluk Cave stands as a reminder that nature, when understood, offers both science and sustenance.
From the stone streets of Harput to the icy silence beneath the ground, this is more than a cave—
it is a living memory carved into the eart.
We carry the ice of the past into the memory of today…
