Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2026 explained: Henri Kagan, Kenso Soai and the Soai reaction, how a chemical reaction can choose a hand (chirality, mirror-image molecules and life).
🇸🇪 Svensk version: • Nobelpriset i kemi 2026, förklarat: När en...
On 7 October 2026 the Nobel Prize in Chemistry went to Henri Kagan and Kenso Soai for the discovery of non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis. This is the full story, explained so it works even if you have never studied chemistry: why molecules can have a left hand and a right hand, how Louis Pasteur found the first clue in wine crystals, how Kagan showed that a small imbalance can be amplified, and how Soai built a reaction that makes more of its own hand until one mirror image wins, even when chance decides which.
I also look at where AI, or superintelligence, fits in. The Nobel documents for this prize do not mention AI, so I say that straight, and I connect it to the 2024 Chemistry Prize for protein design and structure prediction.
