The basilica is located at the intersection of Notre-Dame St West and Saint-Sulpice St in the heart of the Old Montreal district. By 1800, Montreal’s population had grown so much that the existing church on Notre-Dame St had become too small for the parishioners. The parish council, with the help of the Saint-Sulpice Seminary, decided to construct a new building. The current church was consecrated on July 15, 1829. This jewel of Quebec’s religious heritage is one of the oldest examples of gothic revival architecture in Canada.
