How to land a Video Editing internship | Creative Internships Explained

In school you edit your own footage, on your own timeline, for your own story. In an internship, you're editing someone else's vision — to someone else's deadline, with someone else's footage. That's a different job, and it's the one you're applying for. This is what a video editing internship actually looks like: the tasks you'll really be doing, the teams you'll sit in, the backgrounds that get in, and what gets you hired at the end of it — from Laura, cofounder and CEO of ArtBound Initiative. In this video: • Why professional editing is a different skill from editing in school — and what changes on day one • The tasks you'll actually be given: ingesting footage, labeling files, syncing audio, building project structures, cutting rough assemblies, trimming B-roll, basic color correction, pulling selects, exporting assets • Where you'll work — post-production houses, boutique content studios, and in-house content teams at brands • The career path this opens: Assistant Editor → Editor → Senior Editor, plus the colorist, motion graphics and VFX routes that branch off it • How AI is actually changing the role (auto-captioning, AI color grading, scene detection, rough-cut automation) — and why it's a productivity layer, not a threat • What gets you the internship: technical proficiency, speed, reliability, taking direction, and a demo reel of 1.5 to 2 minutes • The one skill AI can't replicate — editorial instinct: knowing what to cut, when to cut, and whyIf you're a student or recent grad in film, TV production, digital media, communications, journalism or marketing — and you edit in Premiere Pro, Final Cut, DaVinci Resolve or After Effects — this is the honest version of what the internship will ask of you.
