Train marshalling (commonly referred to as shunting) is the operational process of sorting, assembling, and rearranging railway rolling stock (passenger coaches, cargo wagons, and locomotives) into a complete train formation (a rake) according to its journey order, destination, and technical safety standards.
Purpose & Safety: Marshalling ensures correct rake configuration—such as placing brake vans and power/generator cars at the required ends, grouping wagons by destination to avoid delays at intermediate stations, and separating hazardous cargo from passenger cars.
Techniques: Operations take place in marshalling yards using flat switching (flat yard shunting where a switch engine pushes or pulls wagons) or hump yards (where wagons are pushed over an incline and gravity rolls them into designated classification tracks).
The Ground Crew: Station porters and yard shunters perform manual point/switch operation, coupling, uncoupling, and brake pipe connections—critical and precise tasks that keep train operations running smoothly.
History of Walton Railway Station
Origins & Strategic Purpose: Built during the British colonial era in Lahore on the main Karachi–Peshawar rail corridor, Walton Railway Station served as a vital suburban and suburban-military transit hub.
Partition & Historic Role (1947): During Partition, the station served as a major arrival and transit point for thousands of arriving refugee families, situated near the Walton relief camp.
Training Legacy: It sat alongside the historic Pakistan Railways Walton Training Academy, where generations of station masters, guards, engine drivers, and traffic staff were educated.
Decommissioning & Central Business District (CBD) Project: After nearly a century of continuous service, the historic station building was closed and decommissioned to make way for Lahore's CBD infrastructure redevelopment, marking the end of a long historical chapter on the Lahore main line.
