This whole project began with a simple cassette tape and a crush. In 1991, I made an ambient mixtape compilation on cassette for someone very special to me. It was mostly stuff that I'd been listening to at the time and wanted to share with her. As the years passed, I had completely forgotten that I'd ever made it for her. I had made her other tapes, but assumed they'd long since been lost to time. More than three decades later, she made a digital copy of that same cassette and sent me a link. Hearing it again was completely unexpected—not only because the tape had somehow survived all those years, but because I was suddenly hearing something I'd created at another point in my life and had nearly forgotten existed. I was deeply moved by such a simple gesture, and it made me want to do something nice in return. What started as the idea of creating a new compilation for her—something made with the sound quality and resources available to me today—gradually became something much larger. Putting it together sometimes meant hunting down music that had become difficult to find or was no longer available. Some items were no longer in my collection—more proof of the "lost to time" comment. Where good digital sources existed, I used them. In other cases, the music was available only on vinyl, which meant finding and purchasing the original records (again), recording them, and carefully restoring the audio as best as possible. And somewhere along the way, one compilation became three. Echoes & Horizons: A Collection of Remembered Places grew out of that process. Although ambient music lies at its heart, these aren't strictly ambient compilations. The music moves through progressive, downtempo, electronic and other territory, connected less by genre than by atmosphere, memory and the places music has an extraordinary ability to create in our minds. Some of those places are real. Some are remembered. Some are imagined. And some may never have existed anywhere except within a piece of music. Because the original cassette was created in 1991, some of the music here naturally reaches back to that period and to what moved me. Other selections came much later, and some, even before. Together, they became something I hadn't originally intended to make: not a recreation of an old tape, but a journey through music, memories and more than thirty years of remembered places. Volume Two — Moonlight is where that journey continues. So yeah. There was a girl. I liked her. I made her a tape. Thirty-five years later, look what the damn thing turned into. This one is for you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TRACKS / CHAPTERS 00:00 Rik Schaffer - Northpoint Nocturne 05:24 Above & Beyond - Believer (Marsh's Guatape Remix [Extended Version]) 11:34 Primal Scream - Higher Than The Sun 18:15 Spiller - Cry Baby (Röyksopp's Malselves Memorabilia Mix) 24:11 808 State - Ancodia (Taters Deep Nit Funky Beat Mix - CD Edit) 29:24 L.U.C.A. - Blue Marine 36:14 Kinobe - Cinnamon 39:39 R:Earth - R-Earth (R-Resonant) 47:09 Mental Cube - Q (CD Edit) 51:57 Martin Ojeda - Fade Away (Original Mix) 1:00:01 Daniel Avery - Knowing We'll Be Here (KiNK Remix) 1:05:34 Sheer Taft - Cascades (Hypnotone Mix) 1:11:30 Moby - Rushing 1:14:24 William Orbit feat.
