In real life Aoba and Kinugasa were actually laid down as Furutaka class cruisers but were not finished in the way Furutaka and Kako were finished. Instead, they were finished in what would basically become Furutaka and Kako's final hull form but with 20cm guns vs 20.3cm guns. They DID get refit to have 20.3cm guns but this did not change the fact that the hulls, armor, and machinery spaces were shared between the Furutaka's and Aoba's. In game, she's a pretty solid T6 ship with good long range gunnery and fire starting capabilities. Her biggest drawbacks are her fragile nature due to low armor amounts and she has some of the worst torpedo arcs of any cruiser in the game.
