“You Heard Me” is a Cinematic Emo Alternative Metal song about prayer, grief, unanswered questions, and learning to trust God even when His answer is not the one we wanted. Sometimes prayer begins with confidence. Sometimes it begins because there is nowhere else left to go. “Close the door... Let the whole world disappear. Just You and me.” The song follows someone entering that private place carrying pain he has hidden from everyone else. The smile is gone. The strength is gone. The explanations are gone. All that remains is a broken prayer and a tired breath. But somewhere between the tears and the throne, something changes. The circumstances may not change. The answer may not come immediately. But the person praying realizes he is no longer carrying everything alone. “When I call Your name I know You hear me.” “You Heard Me” is about bringing God everything — not only faith, gratitude, and beautiful words, but confusion, grief, disappointment, fear, exhaustion, and questions we do not know how to answer. Jesus understands suffering. He knew rejection. He knew betrayal. He knew grief. He knew physical pain. He knew what it meant to weep. So there is no wound we have to disguise before coming to Him. “There isn't a tear You can't understand There isn't a grief You haven't held in Your hands.” The song then turns toward memory. The prayers that were answered. The doors that opened. The mercy that arrived when it was desperately needed. And even the doors God closed. Sometimes what feels like an unanswered prayer may be protection we cannot yet see. “How many roads did You close Because You knew where they would lead?” That realization leads to the heart of the entire song: “When You say yes... I praise You. And when You say no... I trust You. Because either way... You heard me.” Faith is not believing that God must give us every outcome we request. Faith is trusting the One who hears us even when His wisdom leads somewhere different from our own plans. “You Heard Me” is a song about prayer, loneliness, grief, trust, disappointment, answered prayer, closed doors, and finding peace in knowing that God hears even the words we cannot bring ourselves to speak. Selected lyrics: I've carried this weight since the morning came Smiled through the hurt, tried to hide the pain Now I'm alone and I've got nothing left But a broken prayer and a tired breath So I fall to my knees with an hour to give Tell You the reasons it's so hard to live All of the questions I can't explain All of the people, all of the pain And somewhere between my tears and Your throne I don't feel so alone WHEN I CALL YOUR NAME I KNOW YOU HEAR ME Even when the answer Isn't what I prayed it'd be You know every sorrow You have carried more than me Every wound I've ever hidden You've already seen There isn't a tear You can't understand There isn't a grief You haven't held in Your hands And when all I have is a wordless cry You hear what I can't even say inside Then I remember... The prayers You answered The doors You opened wide The nights I begged for mercy And mercy arrived How many times did You save me And I never knew? How many roads did You close Because You knew where they would lead? And when You say yes... I praise You. And when You say no... I trust You. Because either way... You heard me. WHEN YOU SAY YES I'LL PRAISE YOUR NAME WHEN YOU SAY NO I'LL TRUST THE SAME Because the God who bore my sorrow Is the God who knows my pain And every time I reach for You... You meet me there again. I called Your name. You heard me. Inspired by the biblical themes of prayer, trusting God through suffering, bringing every burden before Him, remembering His faithfulness, and believing that He hears even when the answer is different from what we hoped. © 2026 Stephen Kyner.
