Ricardo Villalobos at Gashouder for Awakenings party - Amsterdam NED 16/04/2005 - dj-set. Techno, Minimal, Microhouse Music. www.instagram.com/realricardistas/ www.instagram.com/awakenings/ ask Seb is an independent, non-profit archive dedicated to underground electronic music. Ricardo Villalobos is a DJ and producer born in Santiago, Chile, in 1970 and raised in Germany from the age of three after dictator Pinochet overthrew the socialist government. He is the best underground DJ in the world thanks to his incredible musical culture and his unique point of view, which makes every set a special journey where new lands and perspectives can be discovered, breaking boundaries and the mold. He is widely considered one of the most influential figures in the history of minimal techno and microhouse music, especially thanks to his unique productions, which are still something so special that only Ricardo can create. During the late 1980s, he began producing music and DJing, influenced by artists from the New Wave movement and the emerging European techno scene. In the early 1990s, he became involved in the German underground electronic movement, releasing his first productions and gradually building a reputation as a DJ and producer. Thanks to Perlon Records, he became a reference within the scene and gained international recognition. Throughout the 2000s, he quickly became one of the most famous DJs in the world thanks to his sets, which brought a new sound to the scene by mixing pure techno sounds with melodies from South America and raw minimal influences. Still active today, Ricardo Villalobos continues to be one of the artists who most influence the underground scene and remains a reference point for underground electronic music. The Gashouder is one of the most important venues in the history of European techno culture. Located within the former Westergasfabriek industrial complex in Amsterdam, the building was originally constructed between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as part of the city's gas production infrastructure. Following the closure of the Westergasfabriek in 1967, the structure remained unused for many years before being transformed into a cultural and event space. Its circular architecture, pillar-free interior and large industrial space made it particularly suitable for electronic music events. During the 1990s, the venue gradually became associated with Amsterdam's growing electronic music culture. For many techno fans, the Gashouder became internationally known through its association with Awakenings, eventually earning the nickname "Temple of Techno". Awakenings was founded in 1997 by Rocco Veenboer and Monumental Productions. The first Awakenings event took place at the Gashouder on 30 March 1997. What started as a single techno event rapidly evolved into one of the most influential techno brands in Europe. Although Awakenings later expanded into large-scale outdoor festivals and international events, the indoor events at the Gashouder remained the historical core of the project. Unlike a traditional festival held once a year, Awakenings at the Gashouder developed as a continuous series of standalone events organized throughout the year. The relationship between Awakenings and the Gashouder became so strong that the venue is still considered by many to be the symbolic home of the Awakenings concept and one of the most important indoor locations in techno history. I document sound before it disappears. I preserve context in a time of noise. I save the culture not just the music. If it needs to be louder, it needs to be preserved. for support my project: https://ko-fi.com/askseb https://liberapay.com/askSeb/ https://buymeacoffee.com/askseb Every contribution is reinvested into the archive.
