This main theme here is decolonization after 1900. There were essentially two ways former colonies gained their independence: through negotiation and through armed struggle. Examples of negotiated independence include India and Pakistan along with French West Africa. Examples of independence through armed struggle include Algeria and Vietnam among others. There are also a few independence movements that don't fit neatly into either category including the Egyptian Suez Crisis and the Quebecois Separatist Movement.
