It's called sirih, a betel leaf wrapped around lime paste and areca nut and it's the reason you see so many older Balinese women with stained red teeth. I knew roughly what it was before I put it in my mouth but nothing prepared me for what it actually tastes like and my reaction was not something I could hide. In this video I walk the streets of Denpasar, chew sirih for the first time in fifteen years of living in Indonesia. I also open up about something personal that has been going on in my life lately, which is my dad back in Australia needing more help as he gets older and what that feels like when you live five thousand kilometres away.
