Why you won’t see Trump looking awkward on Chinese TV

Chinese media is routinely ranked among the least free on Earth. After ten years working inside it, I think that ranking measures the wrong thing. When President Xi arrived in Washington, two clips exploded online. In one, President Trump winces as military aircraft roar overhead. In the other, U.S. personnel drop to their knees to fix the red carpet while Chinese officials watch from the plane. Western social media treated both as humiliation: Trump looking weak, America groveling. But you will NOT see those clips on loop in Chinese mainstream media. Not because the footage is secret. Because Chinese media is expected to treat world leaders with dignity, including Donald Trump. Mocking a grimace or framing carpet-layers as political submission would be considered petty, undignified, and rude. I have worked in Chinese media for a decade. There are red lines — Taiwan, ethnic smears — but there is no daily government editor standing over every sentence. Media follows rules. Government does not micromanage the newsroom hour by hour. Western rankings assume press and state must be strictly separate. China does not. That is a different system, not a failed copy of the Western one. If the roles were reversed, Western outlets would replay a wince, question a leader’s health, and invent a groveling narrative. Chinese media declined the cheap shot.
