This video captures the objective and behind-the-scenes of the Alankar duets on the veena project by Vid. Bhagyalakshmi Chandrasekharan. In this series of 36 videos, we present the 72 melakarta ragas with their full arohanam and avarohanam in three speeds and alankaras in seven talas. Each raga will be introduced by a shloka from the Sangraha Chudamani of Govindacharya. Instead of the usual 12 chakram division, we have grouped the 72 ragas into 36 pairs, consisting of a shuddha madhyama raga and its corresponding prati madhyama raga. This enables easy learning and remembrance of the ragas. ————————————————— Melakarta ragas have always been a tough nut for students to crack. Knowledge of the aroha – avaroha, variety of notes, serial number of the raga, name of the chakra, and so forth are only one aspect. However, one must really know how to handle these ragas in a clear and concise way. As per the popular saying, “Gurur mukhena,” one must study shastriya subjects from a Guru to fully realize. In the same lines, the videos on Melakarta Ragas brought out by Vid. Smt. Bhagyalakshmi Chandrashekaran (Mami) has been very helpful for students and rasikas to learn, emulate and develop these ragas through alankara exercises. The nuances and changes in the positioning for each note amongst the adjacent ragas could be keenly observed and learnt from these videos.
