Sermon - How To Trust God When It’s Difficult (Psa 56:1-4) by Gary Coles
TRUST GOD WHEN YOU ARE AFRAID:
Christians learn to trust God when they are afraid by anchoring their hearts in who He is, not in what they feel. Fear draws their attention to the unknown, but faith redirects it to the God who has already proven His faithfulness. In moments of fear, Christians pray, remember God’s past faithfulness, and cling to His Word, allowing His character to steady their hearts. At times, we all experience fear, just as Abraham, Moses, David, Elijah, and Peter did. (Psalm 56:3-4,11; 34:4; 42:5-8)
TRUST GOD WHEN YOU FEEL PERSONALLY ATTACKED:
Christians are called to respond to insults and scorn with a posture that reflects Christ's character rather than the instincts of the flesh. Instead of retaliating or becoming bitter, Scripture teaches believers to respond to hostility with gentleness, patience, and blessing. Jesus said, “Bless those who curse you,” and Peter reminded suffering Christians that Christ Himself endured mockery without retaliating. This also applies to people who may not agree with us on some matter. (Psalm 56:5-7; Proverbs 15:1; James 1:19; Ephesians 4:15)
TRUST THAT GOD KNOWS ABOUT YOUR TROUBLES & CARES:
God knows every trouble we face, and His care is never distant or detached. Scripture reminds us that He sees our tears, hears our prayers, and understands the burdens we carry even when we struggle to put them into words. “Cast all your cares upon Him, for He cares for you” is not just a comforting verse—it’s a declaration of His active involvement in our lives. (1 Peter 5:7; Psalm 56:8; Matthew 10:30).
TRUST GOD’S PROMISES:
We can trust God’s promises because they flow from His unchanging character and His perfect faithfulness. When God speaks, He does so with absolute integrity—He cannot lie, He cannot fail, and He never forgets what He has said. Throughout Scripture, He proves Himself trustworthy by keeping His word to generation after generation, even when circumstances looked impossible. (Psalm 56:9-10; 2 Peter 1:4)
TRUST GOD WILL DELIVER:
God will deliver us because His power, His compassion, and His faithfulness are always at work on behalf of His people. He doesn’t promise a life free from hardship, but He does promise His presence in the midst of it. His deliverance may come through changed circumstances, renewed strength, unexpected provision, or the quiet peace that carries us through the storm—but it always comes. (Psalm 56:12-13; John 8:12; Psalm 116:8-9)
