How did Leadville's silver riches fade?
Follow Colorado's boomtown from Horace Tabor's fortune to Baby Doe's cabin beside the Matchless Mine.
A few dozen dollars in groceries gave a storekeeper a share in a silver strike. Soon Leadville had gaslights, crowded saloons, and an opera house built in about 100 days. This film follows the money from Fryer Hill to Denver mansions and a Washington wedding, through the lives of Horace, Augusta, and Elizabeth 'Baby Doe' Tabor.
But who could count on that wealth lasting? The Matchless Mine, a government buying silver by law, and decisions half a world away lead into the crisis of 1893. Alongside the Tabors are Margaret and J.J. Brown, miners fighting over fifty cents a day, and a town willing to build a palace of ice to bring visitors back. The story continues through Climax and the Leadville Trail 100 to the brick storefronts and mountain trails of today.
Drawing on biographies, contemporary newspaper reports, museum histories, and Oscar Wilde's own account, the film weighs familiar legends against the documented record. It follows the people who gained from the boom and those who bore its costs with care, leaving you room to draw your own conclusions.
