In 1984, a skateboard company spent fifteen thousand dollars on a home video and sold thirty thousand copies. A few years later it was one of the biggest skateboard brands in the world, making around thirty million dollars a year. By 1992, its biggest stars were gone, its two founders had parted ways, and a rival had turned its most famous graphics into a joke.
What really happened to Powell Peralta and the Bones Brigade? How did a team with Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen, Steve Caballero and Lance Mountain fall apart so fast? And what was the “Dear George” ad that skaters still talk about today?
This is the dark story of an engineer who lost his job and built a skateboard empire, the partner who left at the peak of its biggest season, and the small companies that came for his riders one by one.
If you owned a Powell Peralta deck with the skull and sword on the bottom, or wore out a tape of the Bones Brigade Video Show, tell me your story in the comments. Who was your favorite rider?
