In Avatar Firebending is the odd one out. Every other element manipulates a physical substance, but fire is just a chemical reaction, and somehow firebenders can also shoot lightning. So what is firebending actually doing? In this video I break down why firebenders aren't bending fire at all. They're manipulating energy itself. Using Iroh's tea, his lightning lecture, Zuko's failed lightning, combustion bending, and heat redirection, I make the case that firebending is really thermodynamic (and electrical) energy manipulation.
