Ann Cleare (*1983) Dream Machine, for 18 strings (2026) Ensemble Resonanz Enno Poppe, conductor World Première, 18 October 2026, Donaueschinger Musiktage '26 Drawing on concepts and data from the human brain, Dream Machine explores the formation of intelligence and this intelligence’s ability to dream. The string orchestra acts as both a producer and a recipient of knowledge, with the roles of nervous system and neural activity alternating throughout the ensemble as the piece unfolds. The electrical motions of a dreaming human brain are rendered from open source EEG data and orchestrated into dynamic rhythmic patterns, which are then diffused throughout the string orchestra, mirroring the dynamic communication infrastructure of the brain and its ability to create meaning. Dream Machine is a sonic portrait of the human brain, and is a celebration of its physicality. Thanks to my students and colleagues in Trinity College Dublin, whose intriguing research and generous conversations helped to inspire this work.
