In this episode of Doorstep Explorer, we head to the South Downs along Beachy Head, tracing the clifftop story. We start atop the chalk itself, taking in the scale of the cliffs before making our way to Belle Tout, the lighthouse that's been moved, sold, and nearly lost to the sea more than once. From there it's down to Beachy Head Lighthouse, the red and white icon most people picture when they hear the name. We then drop into Birling Gap, where the crumbling coastline is doing its best to swallow the last few cottages. A quick stop in East Dean follows, before we track down the cottage where Sherlock Holmes was said to retire to keep bees, a fictional detail that's somehow taken on a life of its own. We finish, as ever, with a pint at the Tiger Inn to round off the day.
