Griffith Was Never Evil? | Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil Explained What if Griffith from Berserk is not as evil as we think? What if our understanding of good and evil is influenced by the very morality that Friedrich Nietzsche challenged throughout his philosophical work? In this video, we explore Griffith, one of the most controversial characters in anime and manga history, through the philosophical ideas presented in Friedrich Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil. Instead of judging Griffith through conventional morality, we will examine his ambitions, his desire for power, and the psychological foundations behind his actions. Does Griffith truly represent evil, or does his character reveal something uncomfortable about human morality itself? To understand this question, we will explore two important philosophical concepts: Slave Morality and the Will to Power. 1. Slave Morality: Why Do We Judge Griffith as Evil? In Beyond Good and Evil and his broader critique of morality, Nietzsche questions whether our moral values are universal truths or products of historical, psychological, and social forces. Slave morality is a concept Nietzsche develops most explicitly in On the Genealogy of Morality. It describes a system of values associated with the revaluation of powerlessness, in which qualities such as humility, submission, and meekness become virtues, while strength, ambition, and dominance may be condemned as evil. Through this perspective, we can examine why Griffith's ambition and desire to achieve his dream provoke such strong moral reactions. But does questioning conventional morality mean that Griffith's actions are justified? Not necessarily. The real philosophical question is whether our moral judgments are as objective as we believe them to be. 2. Will to Power: Understanding Griffith's Ambition Nietzsche's idea of the Will to Power provides another lens through which we can analyze Griffith's character. Griffith is driven by an extraordinary ambition: his dream of obtaining a kingdom of his own. His identity revolves around this dream, and his desire to achieve it shapes his relationships, decisions, and understanding of the world. His relationship with Guts becomes particularly important because it challenges Griffith's control over his own ambitions and emotions. Through the concept of Will to Power, we can explore Griffith's desire to overcome limitations, establish his own position in the world, and pursue his vision of greatness. However, Nietzsche's Will to Power should not simply be reduced to a justification for domination or the pursuit of power at any cost. Understanding Griffith's motivations is not the same as declaring him morally innocent. It means examining the psychological and philosophical forces that shape his character before reaching a conclusion. Griffith, Guts, and the Nature of Good and Evil Berserk, created by Kentaro Miura, presents us with difficult questions about ambition, sacrifice, freedom, friendship, and morality. Griffith and Guts represent contrasting responses to their circumstances, ambitions, and relationships. Their conflict forces us to question whether human beings can be understood through simple categories such as good and evil. Perhaps the most important question is not whether Griffith is good or evil, but whether we truly understand the standards by which we judge him. This video explores Berserk through Nietzschean philosophy, connecting anime, manga, psychology, and existential questions about human nature. Watch until the end and decide for yourself: Is Griffith truly evil, or have we misunderstood the nature of his character?
