Business major careers and finance careers both pay over $100K, and one credential has a 44% pass rate. Here is what the lazy label gets wrong.
Every year, parents and teens hear the same thing: business is the easy major. The fallback. The path for kids who couldn't pick a real one. This video follows Maya, a fifteen-year-old who walked into her uncle Ray's kitchen with that exact doubt burning in her notebook. What Ray sketched on his yellow legal pad changed the conversation, and it will change yours too.
The video is built entirely on May 2024 Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Ray walks Maya through four real business careers on his yellow legal pad, all paying six figures, and then goes year by year through the financial analyst path so Maya, and your family, can see what the hard part actually looks like. The CFA credential has a pass rate under 45% at every level. That is not a lazy number.
Career breakdowns in this video:
Financial and Investment Analysts (SOC 13-2051): $101,350 median, +7% growth (2023-2033) — builds financial models, writes buy/hold/sell research notes, works toward the CFA charter at Goldman Sachs or BlackRock level firms
Marketing Managers (SOC 11-2021): $161,030 median, +8% growth — runs brand campaigns, manages agencies, and makes the decisions that move consumers. Kellogg at Northwestern is a top feeder program.
Personal Financial Advisors (SOC 13-2052): $102,140 median, +10% growth — sits across from real families, handles retirement, inheritance, and estate planning. High human-skill moat against AI.
Management Analysts (SOC 13-1111): $101,190 median, +11% growth — hired by companies to fix what is broken. Ross School at Michigan is a top feeder. McKinsey-track consulting starts here.
The real insight Maya lands on is this: the major is a door. What you do on the other side is entirely on you. The diploma does not pay six figures. The work behind it does. Business is not the lazy major. It is the one where you have to go earn the hard part yourself, and that hard part includes a certification exam with a 44% pass rate, 300 study hours per level, and $3,520 in exam fees across three sequential levels.
If your teen is considering a business concentration, the four paths covered here (analyst, marketing, advisor, consulting) are the most data-backed starting points available. Each has a BLS salary, a growth rate, a named employer, and a top undergrad program attached. Print this out. Watch it together.
The CFA designation is issued by CFA Institute (cfainstitute.org). Three sequential exams. Level I pass rate: ~44%. Level II: ~42%. Level III: ~50%. Most candidates take 3-5 years to complete all three levels.
Named schools in this video: Wharton (UPenn) for finance, Kellogg at Northwestern for marketing, Texas Tech Rawls College of Business for financial planning, Ross School at Michigan for consulting.
Named employers: Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, BlackRock, Vanguard, Fidelity Investments.
This is Maya Story episode #003. New episode every week.
