"Helmet History" is a new series here on the "Brass Hat Diver" channel, where we'll be taking a look at old diving helmets and learning about their design, age, and how they were used! The Morse Pearler is one of the more rare/uncommon helmets that Morse ever produced. These helmets first appeared in the 1910 Morse catalog but its compatible dress can be found back in the 1904 catalog. The catalog gives a very basic description, telling us it's a helmet with a square shaped breastplate, largely used for pearl fishing. It sold for $100 in 1910 with the code word "bipac." The code word changed in the 1917 catalog to "hakeb" and by 1925 the price increased to $175. The last time we see this helmet is in the 1937 catalog. This breastplate was designed for a diver who works primarily while leaning forward. It has a wide and comfortable fit that doesn't cut into the diver while he's leaning over working.
