35:15 Sermon
We've arrived at Genesis 16. But before we can preach this chapter, we need to address the biggest elephant in the room regarding this passage, and that is the issue of slavery.
Slavery is woven all throughout the Bible and Christians have had a deeply troubled history with it. And apart from the problem of evil, it's one of the biggest objections to the Christian faith today. So we can't just skip past it.
Now, we need to be upfront with you: This sermon can't cover everything to do with slavery. There are passages and objections this sermon simply doesn't get to, including some major passages involved in the debate. What this sermon tries to do is give you a 10,000-metre view, a broad framework that will hopefully help you see that the Bible doesn't actually endorse slavery. In fact, when you read it carefully and honestly as a whole, it undermines, and ultimately, dismantles it.
Further, this sermon doesn't tie everything up in a neat bow. Rather, the hope is that the sermon gives you the tools to approach this topic well. But you will most likely still have questions, so feel free to contact pastor Mark with them.
