How Russia and North Korea Built a 1-KM Road Bridge Across the Tumen River

Russia and North Korea are now connected by road for the first time.
On September 7, 2026, the two countries officially opened a new road bridge across the Tumen River, connecting Khasan in Russia with Tumangang in North Korea.
But building a bridge across an international border is much more complicated than simply connecting two pieces of roadway.
In this video, we go inside the construction of the Khasan–Tumangang Road Bridge and break down how engineers built it from both sides of the river — from the first ground preparation and temporary river works to the construction of the concrete supports, bridge deck, approach roads and border facilities.
The bridge is approximately 1 kilometer long, carries two lanes, and has a roadway about 7 meters wide. The main structure is approximately 1,005 meters, with around 581 meters on the North Korean side and 424 meters on the Russian side.
Construction officially began in April 2025, following a 2024 agreement between Russia and North Korea. Satellite imagery documented the project progressing from early land preparation and temporary construction platforms to piers, approach structures and eventually the bridge deck crossing the river.
And there was one particularly interesting engineering challenge:
How do you build a large bridge in the middle of a flowing river without stopping the river itself?
We'll look at how construction progressed from both shores, how engineers established the foundations and supports, how the bridge sections advanced toward the middle, and how the final road connection was completed.
The new crossing sits only about 415 meters from the existing Russia–North Korea railway bridge, which has connected the two countries since 1959. Unlike that older railway crossing, the new structure is designed specifically for road traffic, including cars, buses and freight vehicles.
By the end of the video, you'll understand exactly how this unusual cross-border bridge went from an empty riverbank to a functioning international road crossing.
