YOUR WORDS WILL FADE — THE FEELING NEVER WILL I have carried one truth with me from a small town in Arkansas to the stages of the world: people may forget what you said, people may forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel. In this reflection, I open my heart on what that truth means for how we live. I speak of dignity, the silent question every human being asks — do I matter? — and how you answer it with your eyes, your tone, your patience. I speak of courage as contagious, of kindness as one of the highest forms of intelligence, of listening as one of the rarest and most healing gifts in our noisy age. I speak of the home we make for one another, of forgiveness as the weight you set down for your own sake, of being believed in as the feeling that straightens a person's spine. I speak of safety as the soil in which everything grows, of enoughness as the wound that achievement cannot heal, of gratitude as a way of seeing, and of grief as a love that has nowhere to go. I speak to the young about the feelings they choose to bring into every room, and to the old about the hope they embody. And I close with the greatest feeling of all: love, the decision beneath every emotion, the legacy that death cannot touch. If you take one thing from my words, let it be this: tend the feelings you plant, for they will grow in gardens you will never see.
