He helped teach the piano to think at the speed of bebop. The world never learned how to protect the man behind the music. Harlem prodigy. Bebop pioneer. Gone at 41. This is the story of Bud Powell's genius, his suffering, and the recordings that still sound daring today. Bud Powell (1924–1966) was one of the architects of modern jazz piano. Born in Harlem and shaped by the circle around Thelonious Monk, he turned the piano into a frontline bebop voice: long, fast right-hand lines, spare and unexpected left-hand chords, and compositions like "Un Poco Loco," "Bouncing with Bud," and "Dance of the Infidels" that musicians are still studying. But his story is also one of violence, illness, and a music world that celebrated his talent without consistently protecting him. In January 1945, at just twenty years old, Powell was beaten by police in Philadelphia. Psychiatric hospitalizations and harsh treatments followed, along with years of struggle. In Paris he found friendship and renewed work, including his bond with Francis Paudras, but his health remained fragile. He returned to New York in 1964 and died on July 31, 1966, at age 41. In this Jazz Noir documentary, we follow Powell from Harlem to the bebop revolution, through the hospitals and the Paris years, to the legacy that outlived him, and we ask what it means to remember an artist honestly: both the greatness of the work and the seriousness of the suffering. Watch to the end for the full story, including the recordings that made him immortal and the final chapter of his life.
