J.S. Bach - Concerto in D minor, BWV 1052R, I. J.S. Bach’s Concerto in D minor, BWV 1052 survives in its best-known form as a concerto for harpsichord, although its origins are thought to lie in an earlier concerto for another solo instrument, now lost. The first movement is particularly virtuosic, characterised by dramatic orchestral tuttis, driving rhythms and a highly expressive solo line. The third movement, by contrast, is propelled by relentless rhythmic energy, with its recurring orchestral theme framing passages of brilliant solo writing and rapid figurations. For this concert, the exchange’s Singapore and Japanese Artistic Directors took on different solo versions of the work. Gabriel Lee performed the first movement in the reconstructed violin version, while Kyoko Koyama performed the third movement in Bach’s surviving harpsichord version. Although written for different solo instruments, the two movements reveal Bach’s remarkable ability to combine instrumental virtuosity with strong musical architecture and expressive intensity. Their pairing also offered a small musical reflection of the exchange itself: two interpretations, two instruments and two musicians from Singapore and Japan, brought together within the same work. The performance brought together young string musicians from Singapore and Japan following four days of rehearsals, workshops, masterclasses and cultural exchange. Filmed live by Poco AV.
