The memories that you want to have, and be able to tell later, you have to make now. My Trip from Schiphol Airport to Taj Mahal, New Delhi 🇳🇱🇮🇳 India Gate, Safdarjung's Tomb & Gandhi Smriti 4–5 April 2026, Day 1 On 4 April 2026, our long-awaited journey through India and China finally began. We left Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in the Netherlands and travelled to New Delhi, India, arriving on 5 April. This was not just another holiday. The trip had a deeply personal meaning for me, and I wanted the first episode to reflect that. In this video, you will hear my own emotional spoken story about how this journey came together and why I wanted to make it. Some things are better told in your own voice. Travel memories are also about why we set off in the first place. After the airport, the flight and arriving in a completely different country, our adventure in New Delhi began. The capital mixes history, busy roads, green avenues and remarkable monuments. One of the places we visited was India Gate, one of New Delhi's best-known landmarks. This imposing sandstone memorial stands along the ceremonial axis of the city. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, it commemorates soldiers of the British Indian Army who died in the First World War and other conflicts. The arch rises about 42 metres and is especially impressive when you stand in front of it. Seeing a monument like this makes you think about the lives and history behind the names carved into the stone. We also visited Safdarjung's Tomb and its beautiful entrance gate. Built in 1754, this magnificent mausoleum was created for Safdarjung, an important nobleman and statesman during the later Mughal period. Its architecture, with a large central dome, symmetrical gardens, pathways and water channels, reflects the traditions of Mughal garden tombs. The entrance gate is an attraction in its own right. Passing through it, you discover the striking mausoleum framed by the formal gardens. Compared with the energy of the city outside, the grounds have a very different, more peaceful atmosphere. It is a wonderful place to look at the details, admire the architecture and imagine what Delhi must have been like centuries ago. Another meaningful stop was Gandhi Smriti, a place with an extraordinary and deeply moving history. This museum and memorial is located at the former Birla House, where Mahatma Gandhi spent the final 144 days of his life. On 30 January 1948, Gandhi was assassinated here while on his way to an evening prayer meeting. Today, Gandhi Smriti preserves the memory of his life and his ideas of nonviolence, truth and peaceful resistance. Visiting a site connected so closely to a person who influenced world history gives a very different feeling from ordinary sightseeing. It is a place for reflection, and a reminder of the enormous impact one person's beliefs and actions can have. Our home in New Delhi was the beautiful Taj Mahal, New Delhi, on Mansingh Road. Despite the name, this is the luxury hotel in India's capital, not the famous Taj Mahal monument in Agra. After a long international journey and a day of discovering the city, having a comfortable hotel to return to was a lovely way to begin our adventure. What a first day! From Schiphol to the streets of Delhi, from India Gate to Mughal architecture at Safdarjung's Tomb and the emotional history of Gandhi Smriti, we had already experienced so many different sides of India. And this was only the beginning of our journey through India, China and Hong Kong. The background music, Warm Hearted by Alex Arcoleo, accompanies my personal spoken introduction. Together they set the tone for a trip that is about experiences, memories and the stories behind them. Real moments, real memories.
