The name itself connects India's railway network with the ancient spiritual identity of Kashi. Varanasi is also known as Kashi and Banaras, and the city has been a major centre of pilgrimage, learning, culture, music, crafts and commerce for centuries. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is traditionally associated with one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. The present temple structure took shape in the 18th century under Ahilyabai Holkar, while its gold dome and spire received major patronage later, including from Maharaja Ranjit Singh.
