🚨 East Coast Nor’easter Forces Hatteras Evacuation — 12-Foot Waves & Coastal Flooding Worsen Today
A powerful October Nor’easter continues to hammer the North Carolina coast, with Hatteras Island becoming one of the hardest-hit areas. A mandatory evacuation for visitors remains in effect as officials watch for repeated ocean overwash, worsening coastal flooding, and possible disruptions along NC Highway 12.
The Outer Banks are dealing with a dangerous combination of strong north winds, rough surf, beach erosion, and coastal flooding. Breaking waves are reaching roughly 9–13 feet, while low-lying shoreline and tidal areas could see around 2–4 feet of inundation. Wind gusts may reach around 45 MPH, making travel even more difficult on exposed roads.
This is a prolonged coastal storm, not a quick-hit event. Repeated high tides will continue to increase the risk of overwash, road flooding, and beach erosion through Wednesday, while dangerous surf may linger into Thursday.
In this update, we track the Hatteras evacuation, NC Highway 12 threat, flooding, waves, wind, and the latest timeline for when conditions may finally begin improving.
