O Scale Model Railroading:Building a Drive from Scratch

This is Segment 1: Framing The Problem Engineering a Mechanism From Scratch series takes you through a structured approach to make a drive to make your O Scale model engines, LRVs, trolley cars, Doodlebugs, switchers etc. operational on your layout. A total of 5 segments enumerating on assumptions that is really part of the design and working toward development work right the first time. The show & tell will be about a drive developed for a Light Rail Vehicle, not the most difficult and challenging but reasonably easy with the right approach. The model will focus on the installation of the drive to fit into the generator section of the car. It is important to first frame the problem because few models have the same form factors that must be considered. More important than the fine detail of a model is the mechanism because that is what contributes the most toward the beauty and realism one sees as it comes down the track and around the curve.
