Norway's new King Haakon VIII has sworn an oath before parliament, formally pledging to uphold the country's constitution and laws following the death of his father, King Harald V. Haakon, 53, automatically became monarch when Harald died aged 89 after a 35-year reign. The parliamentary oath represents one of the first major institutional moments of his reign, as Norway does not hold coronations. Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra attended the ceremony, while Queen Mette-Marit was unable to attend because of complications following her lung transplant.
