The Brazilian government bans anyone from landing on Ilha da Queimada Grande, better known as Snake Island Brazil. Located about 33 kilometers off the coast of São Paulo, this tiny island of just 43 hectares is home to the golden lancehead viper, one of the most venomous snakes in the world and a species found nowhere else on Earth. But is the island really closed because it is too dangerous for people? In this documentary we explore how geography created one of the most unusual places on the planet. Around 11,000 years ago, rising sea levels at the end of the last ice age cut the island off from the mainland and trapped its snakes. With no ground prey left, the golden lancehead adapted to hunt migratory birds, and its venom evolved to act fast enough to stop prey before it could fly out over the ocean. We separate myth from fact: the famous claim of one snake per square meter, the legend of the lighthouse keeper, the real population estimates from Brazilian scientists, and why this critically endangered species now faces threats from wildlife smuggling and inbreeding. We also look at why snake venom research matters, from the Brazilian discovery that led to blood pressure medication to the scientific value locked inside this isolated island. This is the story of why Brazil protects its most dangerous island, and what the landing ban on Snake Island is really guarding. The world has a structure. Let's keep finding it.
